How I have always imagined Val is that she is sweet, but also has a way about her that she is also mean. Though she never enjoyed killing people she has always done so for her own selfish reasons.
She is very unsecretly in love with Voldemort but had never done anything to get noticed by him. I'm thinking maybe an Auror for her.
I have always pictured her as good, just in love with the idea of bad. So maybe she meets said Auror while he is on patrol and she happens to talk to him, but refuses to mention she's a death eater, and she wouldn't be one known to by site, she is very much a common person and would rather drift to the background and she falls in love with him the end of a happy story.
